Archaeological Sites in Sicily
The archaeological park Parco Archeologico Neapolis is a wonderful area where visitors can admire the Roman amphitheatre, the Altar of Hieron II, the quarries, the Ear of Dionysios and the immense Greek theatre, which was the largest in the ancient Greek world of the Western Mediterranean and was built for performances of the Greek Tragedies. Built above a Roman cistern just before the entrance to the archaeological area there is the lovely Norman church San Nicolò dei Cordari.
The Archaeological Park contains some of the most extraordinary monuments of the classical antiquit. Given their degree of importance and interest, the park has few equals elsewhere in Italy. Even if you are only one day in Syracuse you must visit to this impressing archaeological site. The area is also accessible for people who may have problems to walk.
The Park is open every day from 9 am until two hours before sunset.
