Piazzas & Palazzos
The Palazzo Cosentini in Ragusa was built at the behest of the Baron Raffaele Cosentini in the Iate 1700s. It is, at first glance, just a town mansion like to many others built by noble families after the devastaking earthquake of 1693. But on the second glance you will discover a phantasy world - under the balconies.
The most attracting features are the sculptures that are placd beneath the balconies - human figures, gargoyles and grotesque figures.
A wild mix of scenes of everyday life, symbols and figments of phantasy of the architect: a group of wanderers, gargoyles, grotesque masks with animals in the mouth, cornucopias with fruits (a symbol of abundance and wealth), a flute player, a man with a flask on his shoulders, an acrobat, a squire and a woman who thanks topless a noble lord who has spent a fun evening with songs and wine.
